How do kids learn colors?

The way that children learn their colors can be a very personal experience for the child. One might best learn by matching same colors, or recognizing that certain colors are different from one another. Another child might learn by pointing out the colors as you name them. Still others might learn by saying the color themselves.

The first step should be teaching your child to match one color to the same color. Varying activities within this step will help solidify the experience and teach your child that colors are the same whether they are colors of blocks, colors in a book or on a screen or even colors in real life.

The real life scenario comes into play as you begin to point out colors wherever you see them. You can easily turn this into a game that is great fun for your child and can be played anywhere. You can play in the market, in your vehicle or anywhere an array of colors is found.

The most important step for your child, however, is being able to correctly name colors for themselves. This often comes when the child is about three years old. Remembering that the overall process can be time consuming will help both you and your child to be patient with one another.

In the baby stage, children learn quickly from their surroundings. Expose them to an array of bright colors at this time. Toddlers are even more aware and as their brains develop, you can begin to fill their world with color, speaking of it regularly. Preschoolers and kindergarteners begin to see  more focus when learning colors and can really begin to delve into colors, noticing even differences in them, such as what is light blue or dark blue.
